HELLO THERE! :D haha.i know you guys are bored by our incessant rants about saving the earth. but then again. this is a blog for our geog project,and the more we nag about saving the earth, the better we score. So here goes another how-to-save-the-environment post. muahahaha. :D WAYS TO GO GREEN: 1) Use old music magazines, pages from old coffee table books, old picnic sheets, and foreign newspapers etc, as antique looking gift wrappers. 2) Cant play the CD anymore? Turn it into a coaster for hot beverages and save your tables! 3) Buy ice cream in a cone rather than a cup. 4) Go back to using handkerchiefs-used tissue paper is not recyclable. 5) Turn old greeting cards into new ones-but add your own personal touch. 6) Bring your own Tupperware when you're buying takeaway at the food court. PLastic and polysterene packaging contributes tonnes of rubbish each year. 7)Got a party? Use reusable plates,cups,cutlery and napkins instead of those disposable plastic ones. 9) Borrow books from library instead of buying new ones. Or organise a book exchange with some friends. 14) Turn scraps of paper into little notepads for shopping lists, phone messages, and so on. Resources:Seventeen magazine.

For anyone and everyone,there is a show about how a climatologist tried to find a way to save the Earth from Global Warming. It is called The Day After Tomorrow. It is highly educational but due to the time limit and unavailability of the source currently, the movie cannot be shown in class. It can be viewed online or bought from some CD outlets. We hope that everyone will try to watch the show as it can give them more insight about the current threat Global Warming is posing to us and maybe gain inspirations on how we can do our part to help.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! (The 3 Rs).
Mount a local campaign against global warming and persuade many others to join. Together, we can fight against the odds!
Persuade your parents to take the public transports whenever they have time to spare. Lesser burning of gasoline will lessen pollution and also the heat from exhaust freed into the atmosphere will be cut down in amount.
Get your parents included! Community work planting trees is a good way to cut down global warming.
Save energy at home in various ways!

Beware of Global Warming! World View of Global Warming-Global Warming in Antarctica.

Also,on the Larsen shelf (satellite view above),about 3,250 km2 of shelf in area B disintegrated in a 35-day period beginning on 31 January 2002. Geologists believe this portion of the shelf may have been stable for about 12,000 years before this year's collapse.

This cliff has receded about 500 meters since the mid 1960s. The cliff's previous position was to the left of the line of ice floating in the harbor and extended to the headland at the extreme upper left. The regional temperature has increased 5° C in winter over the past 50 years. This reduces seasonal icepack, disrupts growth of krill and changes conditions on penguin rookeries.

This small shelf,fed by glaciers from the Loubet Coast, has been receding recently after growing over a 400-year cooling period. Like other receding ice shelves such as the larger larsen, it may be a sensitive monitor of rising regional temperatures. The Larsen Ice Shelf lost a 1200 square mile section early in 2002. Earlier in the 1990's other huge sections of this shelf disintegrated. In 2003 Argentine glaciologists reported that the land-based glaciers exposed by the removal of those sections had surged rapidly into the ocean.
Thus, although ice shelves are floating and do not add to sea level when they melt or break up, land based glaciers released by such events definitely will add to sea level. Global Warming-its effect on life in antarctica
A colony of Adelies on Humble Island,in one of eight islets off Anvers Island where thousands of Adelies have nested for some 600 years. Over the last 25 years these Adelie colonies have declined sharply. Chinstrap penguins are moving rapidly into Adelie territory. Archaeological digs in penguin colonies indicate there probably were no chinstraps in this area until about 50 years ago, when average temperatures began to rise.

Unlike the colony in the photo, this nesting site has been used by fewer and fewer penguins over recent years. Analyzing climate data, island topography, and breeding statistics, Fraser believes climate change caused the loss of half of its 16,000 nesting Adelies. Warming temperatures and more open water make for greater snowfall and more difficult hunting for krill, affecting nesting success.

Beware of Global Warming! World View of Global Warming-Global Warming In The Arctic and Alaska.
The Arctic is thawing very rapidly, documented by new reports from scientists and arctic natives. The Arctic Climate Impact Assessment,released in late 2004,shows changes from the ice at the North Pole to animals and human settlements. Recent reports from Greenland show glaciers moving meters per hour and rapidly thinning.The Arctic Ocean ice cap is shrinking to the smallest it has ever been in modern measurements, and even winter cold has not been refreezing it as extensively as before.
That sea ice is habitat for the polar bear. Declines in bear nutrition, birth weight and survival have moved the U.S. government (urged by three environmental groups) to propose the bear be named a species threatened with extinction.
The listing of polar bears as threatened under the U.S. endangered species act will name global warming as the main threat, a first. The reduction of the permanent Arctic sea ice by 14 percent since the 1970s is causing not only feeding and breeding difficulties, but also drownings and apparent cannibalism among bears.
The effects of climate change on other Arctic wildlife.
- Caribou give birth at specific times and locations, making them susceptible to changes in weather and vegetation.
- The tundra is now blooming slightly earlier and that it is affected by drier summers and heavier winter snow.
Other effects of global warming
The great loss of ice from the Arctic (which includes not only the polar sea ice cover but also thawing glaciers and tundra permafrost), has other major implications. One of the most important is that dark open water and tundra absorb much more solar heat than white ice and snow. This is a "feedback loop" that will make changes happen faster.
Another large effect in the Arctic is a freshening of the Arctic Ocean. In late 2002, geochemist Bruce Peterson of the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole, MA, and his collaborators in the US and Russia, showed that the major rivers of Siberia and Eurasia are discharging much more water now than in the 1930s.This not only meets the predictions of an effect of climate change, but indicates the scale of change affecting the Arctic.

Global warming What is Global Warming?
An increase in the earth's average atmospheric temperature that causes corresponding changes in climate and that may result from the greenhouse effect. How Global Warming Affects us
Effects of global warming on the environment and for us are varied. It is difficult to attribute specific natural phenomena to long-term causes, but some effects of recent climate change may already be occurring. Rising sea levels, glacier retreat, Arctic shrinkage, and altered patterns of agriculture are cited as direct consequences, but predictions for secondary and regional effects include extreme weather events, an expansion of tropical diseases, changes in the timing of seasonal patterns in ecosystems, and drastic economic impact. Concerns have led to political activism advocating proposals to mitigate, eliminate, or adapt to it. Is Global Warming a current threat?
Global warming is definitely a current threat that isn’t about to stop any time soon unless everyone put in the effort to save the earth. We can see the long-term effects coming in the melting of polar ice and glaciers. The earth is heating at a fast rate. The risks it possess are real. The sooner our race realize that, the sooner we can protect not only the nation; but the world. How can I as a student do my part?
